Richard O Connell

I am fascinated and captivated by the human body.  I work with drawing groups and also hire models.  I am determined to make drawings that will equal the European classical mode. Whether drawing in line or making washes with a brush the aim stays the same: to capture the essence of the pose.  To that end my drawing has to be fresh, fast and honest.  I work with the clock not against it.

Over the years my technique has become simpler and my sense of form more architectural.  I am now seeing form 'instantly' and 'drawing' ahead of my focal point.

I sometimes find myself drawing so quickly that the image is made before I realise it is 'completed'.  I think the artist should identify with the stresses and dynamics of the model's poses. When we draw the human figure we are drawing ourselves.

I was born in Mumbles, Swansea, Wales, U.K. and attended Swansea School of Art, Norwich School of Art and Ruskin School of Drawing, Oxon.

My works are in the collections of Balliol College, Oxon, The National Museum of Wales, Cardiff and The Vale of Glamorgan Civic Offices in Barry and Penarth, South Wales and I have been established as an artist in Penarth, Cardiff since 1982.
