Frank Briffa
Originally from London, Frank now lives and works in Newcastle upon Tyne. In 1998 he left his job as a lecturer to paint full time. Solo shows include two galleries and at the Hancock Museum in Newcastle as well as "I heard a Fly Buzz", at a Leeds gallery, Crossings, Durham University, and the Cruising Cloud, based on the poetry of Emily Dickinson at the Darlington Arts Centre. Frank has also taken part in group shows in London and Edinburgh and has been recently offered a corporate commission for a large painting for offices in Canary Wharf, London.
“ I do not think that painting should only be a pictorial confirmation of what everybody already knows, e.g. that sky is blue, grass is green etc. painting still has the potential for widening and even changing perceptions of our visual environment. I have never been attracted by the idea of being a ‘single issue’ artist. If my work does reveal a major preoccupation then that preoccupation is diversity. I believe that activities, processes and subjects that may seem incongruous or incompatible often have unifying links. A vast similitude interlocks all.”
