Wendy Botto
Whatever the media my aim is always 'to create a lively, happy celebration of the subject, using shapes, lines & colours to compose the painting - akin to Matisse's ideal of 'what I dream of in art is a balance of purity & serenity, devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter.' My art is a reflection of my family life often based upon places visited and my daughters discovery of the world, hence the farm and zoo animal period. I work as much as I can from life (or personal photographs) but allow the colours and paint to take over, retaining the freshness, spontaneity, movement and a sense of fun. Although often likened to Van Gogh (for energy & rythmn) and The Fauves (as a colourist), the application of paint is quite removed form them standing me somewhere between Van Gogh, The Fauves, Impressionists, Bonnard and Post-Impressionists! Since my return to painting in the last 7 years I have exhibited regularly in Oxfordshire, I also tutor various colour painting workshops following my particular style and limited palette.
